About the museum

The museum is located on the grounds of the former Wehr ironworks, whose hammer forge goes back to the Middle Ages. After the ironworks was abandoned in 1863, a weaving mill moved into the buildings, which in 1888 was taken over by the Mechanische Buntweberei Brennet, founded in 1881 in Öflingen. Today's Brennet GmbH emerged from this company.

In 2001, the company set up its own textile museum in the manor house of the former hammer works from the mid-18th century and in the adjoining Laborantenhaus. On more than 1,000 square meters, the story of the company, its employees and the owner family Denk is told; each floor of the Laborantenhaus represents a generation of entrepreneurs.

Reconstructed workplaces, original looms and sewing machines, tools, models, pattern books and historic photographs illustrate the development of the textile industry in southern Baden since the 18th century, beginning with cottage and putting-out weaving in the Hotzenwald. A separate section is devoted to company culture with social facilities, festivals and company sports. The manor house also contains an art collection with works by 20th-century artists from Wehr and Säckingen as well as works by Hans Thoma and Käthe Kollwitz.
