About the museum
The University Museum opened in 2019 as part of the university's 100th anniversary celebrations. It emerged from the university's collections and archives and is located on the second floor of the main building on Edmund-Siemers-Allee, a listed lecture hall that was dedicated as early as 1911, before the university was founded.
The permanent exhibition "100! Geschichte und Gegenwart der Universität Hamburg" covers more than 300 square meters and over 300 objects. It spans from the Weimar Republic through the Nazi era to the student protests around 1968, and also highlights distinctly Hamburg topics such as port, trade and colonialism. It is organized into 15 theme islands, a timeline and two art installations, plus films, audio stations and interactive stations.
A second area of the building is dedicated to changing projects from research, teaching and education. The museum also offers guided tours, workshops and participatory school projects.
