About the museum
The Urdonautal Museum opened in 1990 in the former gate-arch house of the market town of Wellheim. In 13 display cases it shows exhibits on natural and landscape history, geology, prehistory and early history, the history of the market town and its districts, and industrial history.
The tour begins with tools and products from the Konstein glassworks, which only ceased operations in the mid-1980s. This is followed by explanations of landscape history and small dioramas of today's nature.
One focus is archaeological finds: the Bronze Age hilltop settlement on the castle rock near Aicha provided decorated pottery shards and stone tools; there are also finds from a burial mound field from around 1600 BC, Hallstatt-period pottery, evidence of Celtic iron smelting, and a Roman marsh bridge. Five castle sites are documented in the municipal area; a model of Wellheim Castle in its 14th-century state stands in a separate room.
