About the museum
In 1990 a permanent exhibition on the archaeology of the Nassenfels area opened in the Nassenfels primary school. The Verein für Heimatpflege im Schuttergäu (local heritage association) made parts of its large collection publicly accessible this way; a room in the school has served as a museum ever since. Since schools are no longer as open to visitors as they once were, the exhibition can now only be viewed by appointment.
It covers around 80,000 years of human history. A wall case shows hand axes and flakes of the Neanderthals from nearby Speckberg, blades of Ice Age hunters and microliths of the Mesolithic, plus mammoth teeth. Finds from the earliest farmers of the Linear Pottery culture (Bandkeramik), a perforated stone axe, a Bronze Age arrowhead, and bog iron ore and iron slag from the Celts follow. Fossils from the Jurassic sea and wood from the Tertiary complete the geological side.
The largest room is devoted to the Roman vicus Scuttarensis, the settlement at today's Nassenfels. On display are everyday pottery and terra sigillata with potters' stamps, coins, writing implements, jewelry, tiles from an underfloor heating system, two altar stones, and a replica of an Epona relief. In the middle of the room stands a model of the former Nassenfels moated castle.
