About the museum
The museum's origins lie in schools: the teacher Hellmut Vogel and his pupils became state champions in the school forest competition in 1966. Afterward, the idea arose of showing the educational work in the school forest to the public as well. The observation tower on the Wulfsboom offered itself as an exhibition site, where the first, still small display had opened more than fifty years ago.
Since then, the house has grown into a center for nature conservation and forest education on the west coast. It lies in the middle of the Burger Wald nature experience area, a rarity in otherwise forest-poor Dithmarschen, with about 28 hectares of land, ponds, orchards, moraine slopes and heathland. The collection of taxidermied animals shows the region's habitats; further themes include nature and species conservation, hunting, geology, paleontology and archaeology.
After extensive renovation and conversion work with a newly designed exhibition, the museum reopened on June 13, 2026. The website is operated by the municipality of Burg; the association Burg Natur e. V. supports the work.
