About the museum
The local history museum stands on the market square in the historic centre of Brunsbüttel-Ort, an ensemble of about a dozen individually listed buildings whose layout dates back to the mid-17th century. Right next door is the Jakobuskirche (St. James's Church), built in 1678, a Dithmarschen late Baroque building that combines well with a museum visit.
The exhibition tells the story of the lock town at the mouth of the Kiel Canal into the Elbe: from the construction of the canal and long-vanished crafts and trades to the little-known fact that whaling was once carried out from Brunsbüttel. The museum is run by the Brunsbüttel adult education centre (Volkshochschule), and a team of volunteers looks after the house. Besides regular opening hours, the museum hosts concerts, craft afternoons, discussion evenings and an annual Christmas exhibition.
