Waschhaus Weegerhof
Cooperative wash house from 1928 in Solingen with completely preserved original equipment – open on the first Sunday of the month.
About the museum
The Spar- und Bauverein Solingen built a central wash house in its Weegerhof housing estate in the Höhscheid district, which from 1928 was available to the residents of about 185 houses. For its time, the communal laundry was considered technically advanced and socially exemplary, since it relieved families of laborious hand washing.
The wash house remained in operation until 2005. It was then placed under heritage protection together with its complete equipment; it is considered probably the only facility of its kind in Germany whose original equipment is completely preserved. On view are large drum washing machines, spin dryers, steam-heated drying cabinets, and mighty steam mangles, complemented by zinc tubs, washboards, and old irons.
Today the housing cooperative, the Förderverein Industriemuseum (friends' association), and the LVR-Industriemuseum Solingen jointly look after the building as a small museum on the everyday and social history of washing laundry. Besides the monthly openings, concerts, readings, and family festivals occasionally take place there.
