About the museum
The Rhön village of Werberg was first mentioned in a document in 1327. When the Wildflecken training area was built, residents had to leave the village in 1937/38. After use as troop quarters, some former Werbergers returned from 1946 onward, and expellees settled there. In 1966 the village was finally abandoned; in 1973 the houses, along with the school and the small church of 1852, were blown up.
Since 1987 the museum "Werberger Stube" in the district of Kothen has kept the memory of the lost village alive. It was created on the initiative of Ernst Zimmermann, who gathered mementos from former residents. Initially it consisted of three rooms; in 2018 another memorial room was added.
The centerpiece is the "Werberger Stube", furnished after the model of an original Rhön "gute Stube" (best parlor). The museum also shows many old photographs of the village as well as farm tools and implements. The cornerstone, the tower cross, a bell and the baptismal font were rescued from the demolished church; they are displayed together with old liturgical vestments. Former Werbergers guide visitors through the rooms and talk about their everyday lives.
