Nicolas Mahler – Wilhelm-Busch-Preis 2026

Exhibition on the comic artist and illustrator Nicolas Mahler, Wilhelm-Busch-Prize winner 2026, whose work thrives on black humour, sparse lines and absurd situations.

About the museum

Wilhelm Busch was born in Wiedensahl on April 15, 1832, the eldest of seven children. His grandfather had bought the farm with its land in 1818; the roughly 400-year-old house on Dorfstraße is now a memorial and museum experience. Busch spent more than forty years of his life in the village, which served him as a place of retreat and inspiration.

His childhood bed can still be seen in the historic living rooms of the birthplace. A biographical exhibition shows objects from his possession and takes visitors on a media-based journey through his life; in the Kabinett, temporary exhibitions present original drawings and paintings. The Wilhelm Busch Bibliothek collects his printed work, including more than 300 translations into almost all languages and dialects, and offers children a book cave.

The Wilhelm Busch Land also includes the museum in the Old Parsonage, where Busch lived in the 1870s in the household of his sister and her husband, the pastor. His simple room has been preserved, and the exhibition, redesigned in 2021, also shows village life of his time. The operator is the Museumslandschaft Wilhelm Busch Wiedensahl e. V., which unites the Förderkreis Wilhelm Busch and the Heimatbund Wiedensahl; the house holds the Museumsgütesiegel (museum quality seal) for 2021–2027. Civil marriage ceremonies have also been held in the birthplace since 2003.
