About the museum
From a simple wild spa, Rehburg developed into a state spa in the 18th century. The healing springs have been documented since 1690; in 1752 the Hanoverian king George II ordered the expansion of the "Rehburger Brunnen" (Rehburg spring). A well house, a bathhouse, and a guesthouse were built, and by 1786 the neoclassical New Bathhouse followed. In the 19th century a promenade hall and a pump room were added. The town, known as the "Madeira of the North," attracted the Hanoverian nobility, up to the royal family itself. When the spring ran dry, the town relied on whey cures.
After Bad Rehburg lost its status as a recognized spa in 1954, the buildings were used as a retirement home and fell into decay after it closed. Only a city council resolution by the town of Rehburg-Loccum in autumn 2000 secured their rescue; renovation began in 2001, and at the end of March 2003 the complex opened as "Romantik Bad Rehburg."
Today the New Bathhouse houses the permanent exhibition "Kurleben der Romantik" in twelve former bathing cabinets, covering the Romantic era, the history of spa life, and spa and wellness culture, supplemented by interactive stations. There are also art exhibitions, events, a tourist information office, and food and drink service in the promenade hall.
