zeiTTor - Museum der Stadt Neustadt in Holstein
Hands-on museum in the Kremper Tor on the Stone Age at Lübeck Bay and the history of the town of Neustadt – children and teenagers free.
About the museum
The museum was founded in 1908 as a district museum and for a long time bore the name Ostholstein-Museum. Since 2007 it has belonged to the town of Neustadt in Holstein; under the name zeiTTor, it now sees itself as an experience and hands-on museum with the motto "Action – Interaction – Communication." Since 2015 it has been accredited by the Museum Certification of Schleswig-Holstein, and since 2021 it has also held the state certificate for Education for Sustainable Development.
The museum is housed in the Kremper Tor, one of the last medieval town gates in Schleswig-Holstein, and its annexes. The tour begins with the glaciers of the Ice Age. The focus is on the finds from the "Marienbad" settlement site, which now lies on the bottom of the Baltic Sea and is 6,000 to 8,000 years old. Further stops are devoted to the Neolithic, the Bronze Age, and the Slavic period, for example with the cup-marked stone of Braak and a reconstructed burial mound.
The town gate itself deals with medieval Neustadt, with weapons, a reconstructed chain mail shirt, and a silver treasure. Next come the market square and crafts, a Biedermeier room, the dental practice of Dr. Axt, and the estate of the ballad singer Ernst Becker, before the exhibition traces the 20th century up to the arrival of refugees and displaced persons. At many stations, visitors can try things themselves, for example with the fire drill or when grinding grain. Through the zeiTTor, you can also reach the Cap Arcona Museum.
