Fashion photographs from 1937 by Frankfurt photographer Angelika von Braun, taken at the Rhein-Main airport and airship port with the airship LZ 129 "Hindenburg" as a backdrop.
About the museum
Zeppelinheim was founded in the mid-1930s as a residential settlement for the crews and ground staff of the Deutsche Zeppelin-Reederei, which from 1936 offered transatlantic voyages from the new Rhein-Main airport and airship port. Today the community is part of Neu-Isenburg, and its name still reflects its origins.
In 1977, former airship crew members and zeppelin enthusiasts came together as the "Zeppelin-Kameradschaft" and began collecting objects related to airship travel. By the end of the 1970s they were already able to show a first exhibition room. In 1988 the current museum building opened as a separate annex to the community center; its vaulted roof reproduces one quarter of the cross-section of the airship LZ 10, illustrating the sheer size of the zeppelins. The Kameradschaft gave rise to the Verein für Zeppelin-Luftschiffahrt Zeppelinheim e. V., which runs the museum together with the city of Neu-Isenburg.
The permanent exhibition focuses on passenger travel: scale models from LZ 1 to LZ 130, a reconstructed section of the promenade deck of LZ 129 "Hindenburg," set tableware, and uniforms convey everyday life on board. A technology section shows, among other things, a Maybach engine from LZ 127 "Graf Zeppelin," an onboard radio, steering wheels, and parts of the framework. Films, virtual reality headsets, and hands-on stations for children round out the offering, and special exhibitions change in the basement.
