About the museum
The Old Town Hall on Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz was built in 1826/27 in the neoclassical style, to plans by the Darmstadt state master builder Georg August Lerch. At times, the ground floor housed a court jail and the police attendant, while the municipal council met upstairs. The building served as the town hall until 1973, when the administration moved into a new building.
From 1983 the building housed the local history museum. Two years later, the former cell in the cellar was converted into a memorial room for the victims of National Socialism. Since 2012 the museum has no longer been open regularly, only for guided tours, events and special occasions.
The collection spans from prehistory and early history to the 20th century. Focal points are Wolfsgarten Palace, the Imperial era, the Weimar Republic, the Nazi era, and the everyday life of the craftsmen's and workers' community in the 19th century. There are also an office, a Biedermeier room, a general store and an Ebbelwoi room, and in the foyer the largest collection of pictures by the Langen landscape painter Hermann Bahner (1867–1938).
