About the museum
The ZERO foundation was founded in Düsseldorf in 2008 as a non-profit foundation under German civil law. Its founders were the ZERO artists Heinz Mack, Otto Piene and Günther Uecker together with the Stiftung Museum Kunstpalast; the initiative came from Mattijs Visser. The artists contributed artworks and archival material such as photographs, correspondence, invitation cards, drafts and posters.
ZERO emerged in Düsseldorf in the late 1950s as a deliberate break with traditional art and developed into one of the most important avant-garde movements of the 20th century. The foundation sees itself as an internationally networked research center that preserves, researches, presents and places ZERO art and the movement in context, and publishes its results in its own publications. Exhibitions have taken place in Kobe, New York, Amsterdam and Pohang, among other cities.
Since 2018 the foundation has used the ZERO-Haus, the former studio house at Hüttenstraße 104, for lectures, film evenings and exhibitions. On the first floor, Günther Uecker had his studio in the 1960s; on the third floor (US count) is Otto Piene's fire studio, where his fire paintings were made, preserved in its original state. The foundation's scholarly archive is continually being expanded.
