About the museum
The Helmis Natural History Museum was founded on the private initiative of Panagiotis Helmis and opened on 10 October 2000 in the village of Agia Marina on Zakynthos. It is housed in a traditional building and is the only natural history museum on the island.
Its aim is to acquaint visitors with the rich natural environment of Zakynthos, from the sandy beaches where sea turtles nest to the forests of the interior. The collections include a large number of specimens from the natural world: plants, butterflies, rocks, birds, marine organisms and fossils with impressions of ancient plants and animals. The museum also has educational material for children and organises exhibitions and events.
