About the museum
The mansion was built in 1882 in Athens to designs by the German architect Ernst Ziller, who used it as his main residence and workplace. Construction was completed in 1885.
In 1912 the building was bought by the banker Dionysios Loverdos, who converted part of it to house his collection of post-Byzantine art. In 1979 Loverdos's heirs granted the mansion to the Greek state, and in the 2010s extensive restoration work was carried out to convert it into a museum.
Since May 2021 the building has housed part of the Loverdos collection as a branch of the Byzantine and Christian Museum, with free admission for the public.
