About the museum
The Museum of Cretan Ethnology was founded in 1973 on the initiative of the Mesara Cultural Association and is located in Voroi Pyrgiotissis, in Heraklion Prefecture. Between 1973 and 1981 the building was constructed, the first ethnological survey of the Cretan countryside was carried out, and objects were systematically collected. The building was designed to the specifications of the French architect Georges-Henri Rivière, creator of the National Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions in Paris.
The first ethnographic exhibition opened in 1988, and in 1992 the museum was awarded the European Museum of the Year Award (EMYA) of the Council of Europe. In 2001 a 2,800 m² building was completed for research, educational and conference activities.
The exhibition is organised into seven sections that follow basic human needs and activities: food, architecture, weaving, crafts, production and trade, transport, customs and traditions, and social organisation. The museum also presents, in digital form, metalwork in architecture, furniture, weaving and ceramics.
