About the museum
The mosque on Monastiraki Square was built in 1759 by the voivode of Athens, Mustafa Aga Tzisdarakis, in the heart of the area known as Kato Pazari. It was also called the Mosque of Kato Syntrivani, after the fountain (syntrivani) that stood in front of it.
In 1915 the monument was restored by the architect Anastasios Orlandos, and in 1918 it was assigned for museum use to the newly founded Museum of Greek Handicrafts, today's Museum of Modern Greek Culture. It was the museum's first home from its founding until 1973.
The founding inscription is preserved above the entrance, and on the east side of the interior the elaborate mihrab survives, decorated with stalactites, painted plant motifs and inscriptions. Today the monument houses the exhibition section on the history of the museum, with emblematic objects of modern Greek culture dating from the 17th to the mid-20th century.
