About the museum
Báta- og hlunnindasýningin ehf. is a company owned by Reykhólahreppur, the Félag áhugamanna um bátasafn á Breiðafirði (Society of Friends of a Boat Museum in Breiðafjörður) and Æðarvé. It was founded for the exhibition in 2011. The exhibition is a window onto the world of the birds, boats and natural riches of Breiðafjörður.
It tells how the people of Breiðafjörður made use of the natural resources: egg collecting, bird hunting, eiderdown collection, seaweed and seal hunting. Boats were essential for reaching these resources on the islands, and the boatbuilding workshop shows wooden boats with a special Nordic design and craftsmanship suited to the conditions of Breiðafjörður.
Visitors get to know the eider duck in a special way and learn about the old clinker-built boats (súðbyrðingar) in the Breiðafjörður style. On the lower floor of the museum is the machinery collection of Þórhallur Matthíasson from Litlibær in Skötufjörður. In the same building are a tourist information centre and a gift shop with local products, freshly baked bread, coffee, tea, books and souvenirs.
