About the museum
Vatnasafn (Water Museum) is a long-term work by the American artist Roni Horn, located in the old library building on Bókhlöðustígur in Stykkishólmur. The house was converted into a museum of water, words and weather reports, and it belongs to the Norska húsið (Norwegian House), the local heritage museum of Snæfellingar and Hnappdælir.
The museum contains 24 glass columns filled with water from the country’s main glaciers, under the title Water, Selected. One of the glaciers has already disappeared, but it lives on in a column in the Vatnasafn. The work Weather Reports You is based on recordings of interviews with people about the weather. On the lower floor there is a studio for writers who stay there on work residencies.
To visit the museum you need an access code, which is obtained at the Norwegian House, Hafnargata 5.
