About the museum
The Hákarlasafnið (Shark Museum) is at the farm Bjarnarhöfn on the north side of the Snæfellsnes peninsula, about a 25-minute drive from Stykkishólmur. For generations the family on the farm has kept up the traditional methods of curing Greenland shark, which at the beginning was part of people’s struggle for a living on the coast.
At the museum visitors can see old curing sheds and objects from fishing, and learn about the Greenland shark and Icelandic food traditions. A visit with a tasting usually takes 30–60 minutes. A guided tour is offered with a tasting of fermented shark and brennivín (Icelandic schnapps).
