About the museum
Fischersetur in Selfoss is dedicated to the memory of the American chess champion Bobby Fischer, who became world champion in 1972 when he defeated Boris Spassky in the match in Reykjavík. The match, often called the match of the century, was played in Laugardalshöll at the height of the Cold War and ended decades of Soviet dominance in chess.
The centre holds objects connected with Fischer and the Skákfélag Selfoss og nágrennis (Selfoss and District Chess Club). On display are the score sheets of Fischer and Spassky, a printout of the radiation measurements that Spassky's delegation demanded after the seventeenth game, and a replica of the chessboard used in the match. Also on show are various items from Fischer's last years in Iceland, 2005 to 2008, including his chair from the second-hand bookshop Bókin in Reykjavík.
Fischer died on 17 January 2008 at the age of 64 and lies buried in the Laugardælir churchyard, a few hundred metres from the centre. The Skákfélag Selfoss og nágrennis plays chess at the centre on Wednesday evenings during the winter months.
