About the museum
The Veiðisafnið (Hunting Museum) in Stokkseyri was founded in 2003 and opened to the public on 8 May 2004. It is run as a non-profit foundation and is the only museum in the country devoted to hunting and wild animals. Its aims include introducing future generations to hunting and hunting rights, with an emphasis on nature conservation and sensible hunting.
The museum has a wide collection of stuffed animals, both Icelandic mammals and birds and animals from Africa and Greenland, such as lions, zebras, a giraffe, reindeer, monkeys, seals, a polar bear and muskox. There are also objects from the Icelandic Institute of Natural History, which the museum displays under a special agreement.
The museum has an exhibition of firearms and hunting-related objects, including knives, traps and hides, along with a cartridge workshop where equipment for reloading ammunition is shown. The Drífa shotguns made by Jón Björnsson from Dalvík are particularly notable. In addition to the permanent exhibition, special exhibitions are set up, such as an annual gun show and a touch safari for the visually impaired and blind.
