About the museum
The Fuglasafn Sigurgeirs (Sigurgeir's Bird Museum) opened in a ceremony on 17 August 2008 and is one of the finest natural history collections in the country. The museum owns about 330 stuffed birds and some 500 eggs; of these, 280 birds and 300 eggs are on display in the exhibition hall.
The museum holds all Icelandic breeding birds except the white-tailed eagle, which is on loan from the Natural History Institute of Iceland and Akureyrarstofa. The information boards give the birds' names in several languages, their distribution in summer and winter, and a button that lights up the display for each bird.
Mývatn and the River Laxá are known for their rich birdlife, especially ducks and other waterbirds, and 14 duck species breed there. Birds can be viewed at the lake all year round.
