About the museum
Grenjaðarstaður in Aðaldalur, about 30 km south of Húsavík, is an old rectory and farm. The farmhouse is one of the largest turf houses in Iceland, and its walls are built of lava stone with driftwood panelling. The oldest part was built in 1865, and the house was lived in until 1949.
The Þjóðminjasafn Íslands (National Museum of Iceland) acquired the turf farmhouse in 1954 and had it restored. A local history museum opened in the farm in 1958. The Menningarmiðstöð Þingeyinga (Þingeyjar Cultural Centre) now runs the museum.
The museum holds around 2,000 objects that reflect traditional country life. The church on the site dates from 1865 and is still in use, and in the churchyard is a runestone from the Middle Ages.
