About the museum
The Minjasafn Egils Ólafssonar (Egill Ólafsson Heritage Museum) at Hnjótur in Örlygshöfn preserves objects from the history of the southern Westfjords. The museum is named after Egill Ólafsson, a local resident and collector who laid its foundations.
Visitors can learn about fishing, farming and the daily life of the people in the area, including fishing gear and household utensils. The museum also covers aviation history, and aircraft are on display. A special exhibition is devoted to the rescue of the crew of the British trawler Dhoon, which ran aground under Látrabjarg in 1947.
At the museum there is a café and a souvenir shop with handicrafts, and it also houses a tourist information centre. The museum is open during the summer. Outside that time you can get in touch and arrange a visit.
