About the museum
Bolungarvík was for a long time the largest and oldest fishing station on Ísafjarðardjúp. At Ósvör, just outside the town, a fishing station has been rebuilt as it was in the rowing-boat era of the 19th century, and it now houses the town's maritime museum. The museum has operated in its present form for about three decades.
On the site is a double fishermen's hut where the fishermen lived and stayed, a salt house and a drying rack (hjallur) where fish was dried. There is also fishing gear, tools and equipment used for fishing and fish processing in earlier centuries, such as a winch for hauling boats ashore.
The six-oared boat Ölver, built in 1941, is on display at Ósvör in summer but is owned by the Westfjords Regional Museum (Byggðasafn Vestfjarða). Staff greet visitors in leather sea clothing in the manner of fishermen of earlier times and talk about life at the fishing station. The municipality of Bolungarvík has commissioned a new service building for the site.
