About the museum

Þórbergssetur opened on 1 July 2006 at Hali in Suðursveit, the birthplace of the writer Þórbergur Þórðarson (1888–1974). The centre was built in his memory and houses a reception, a dining hall, a shop and two exhibition halls. The building was designed by Sveinn Ívarsson and Jón Þórisson; Jón also designed the exhibition, and the actor Jón Hjartarson wrote the text.

In the west hall the life and work of Þórbergur and the history of Iceland during his lifetime are presented with information panels and stage sets that visitors can walk into. There you can see the baðstofa loft of the byre house at Hali as it was in his childhood, and his study at Hringbraut 45 in Reykjavík. The exhibition also describes the isolated life in south-east Iceland before 1960, with crossings of large rivers, subsistence farming and the close community of the residents.

In the east hall there are changing exhibitions and several objects connected with Þórbergur and his works. The restaurant serves, among other things, trout from the local area and lamb. The centre hosts groups with a varied programme, such as guided tours of the exhibition, storytelling sessions and readings from Þórbergur’s works.
