About the museum
Svavarssafn is the art museum of the municipality of Hornafjörður and is named after the painter Svavar Guðnason (1909–1988). The museum opened on 24 June 2011 with an exhibition of Svavar’s works, which the municipality had recently received as a gift from his widow, Ásta Eiríksdóttir (1912–2008).
The museum is on the ground floor of the Town Hall of Hornafjörður. Its task is to acquire, catalogue, preserve and display works of art, with an emphasis on links to art in East Skaftafell county, and to look after the works owned by the municipality and its institutions. The collection comprises about 1,000 works, mainly by Svavar and other artists from Hornafjörður.
The works are displayed in the museum’s halls and lent to the municipality’s institutions, for example the health centre, the town hall and schools. The museum also holds temporary exhibitions of contemporary art by Icelandic and foreign artists.
