About the museum
Birr Castle has been the home of the Parsons family, the Earls of Rosse, for more than 400 years, and its demesne of about 120 acres lies in the heritage town of Birr. The family were pioneers in science, engineering and astronomy, and the Earls collected many of the plants in the gardens on their travels over the last 150 years.
The best-known object is the Great Telescope, a reflecting telescope nicknamed the Leviathan, which was the largest in the world for more than 70 years. With it the 3rd Earl of Rosse made drawings of nebulae in the 1840s. His wife Mary, Countess of Rosse, was an early photographer, and her darkroom is described as one of the oldest in Europe.
Ireland’s Historic Science Centre occupies the former stable block, designed by the 3rd Countess, across the ground and first floors. Its seven galleries cover the family tree, the building and restoration of the Great Telescope, family objects such as the Lunar Heat Machine and a letter from Neil Armstrong, the early nebula drawings, the Dark Room and the Engineerium on the engineer Charles Parsons. The castle itself is a private family home and can only be seen on seasonal guided tours.
