Opening hoursAdmission €8
Limited operations. The visitor centre is closed for essential works and the monastic site stays open during the redevelopment, with temporary toilets and a welcome hub. The car park closes completely from 19 October, and the site is announced to close to visitors afterwards; check heritageireland.ie for the latest information.

About the museum

Saint Ciarán founded the monastery of Clonmacnoise on the banks of the River Shannon in the sixth century. It grew into one of the great centres of learning in early medieval Ireland, drawing students from across Europe, and is often described as a university of its time.

The site today holds a cathedral, two round towers, three high crosses, nine churches and more than 700 early Christian grave slabs. The Nun’s Church stands about 300 metres to the east of the main complex.

The original high crosses, including the tenth-century Cross of the Scriptures, and a selection of grave slabs are displayed in a purpose-built exhibition area, while replica crosses stand outdoors in their original places. The site is run by the Office of Public Works. The visitor centre, with an audiovisual presentation on the history of the monastery, is closed for essential works, and a redevelopment contract was signed in April 2026.
