About the museum
Boyle Abbey was founded in the 12th century by monks from Mellifont Abbey under the patronage of the local MacDermott family. It became one of the most powerful early Cistercian foundations in Ireland and one of the foremost in Connacht.
Cromwellian forces devastated the abbey in 1659, and it was later used as a military garrison, which caused further damage. Much of the church survives and is well preserved.
A restored gatehouse of the 16th or 17th century now houses an interpretive centre with an exhibition. The site is run by the Office of Public Works, and visits are by guided or self-guided tour of about 30 minutes. According to Heritage Ireland the abbey is closed for the 2026 season and reopens in 2027.
