About the museum
The Sliabh an Iarainn Visitor Centre stands beside Acres Lake in Drumshanbo, on the edge of Lough Allen in north County Leitrim. Sliabh an Iarainn, the Iron Mountain, gave its name to the surrounding area, where iron and coal were mined for centuries. The centre opened in new premises beside the lake and tells the story of the region for visitors.
Its displays use audio-visual material to cover the history of the Arigna and Sliabh an Iarainn district, with special attention to the railway, the canal, the lakes, iron and coal mining and the musical heritage of the area. A short audio-visual show takes viewers through the lakes, mountains and towns of the surrounding countryside.
The centre also works as a tourist information point for the county and neighbouring areas, with material on heritage attractions, industrial heritage, Leitrim music, the myths and folklore of Lough Allen and the Marble Arch Geopark in Fermanagh. Drumshanbo and Acres Lake are the start of the Shannon Blueway, including the boardwalk across the lake.
