About the museum
Cashel Folk Village is a privately run museum on Dominic Street in Cashel, a short walk from the Rock of Cashel. The site is said to be the birthplace of the priest and historian John Lanigan, author of an Ecclesiastical History of Ireland, and it was founded as a museum in 1984 by Martin O’Dwyer Bob, a local historian who wrote several books on Irish and Tipperary history and was a co-founder of the Cashel Historical Society. He was also the driving force behind the memorial at St Mark’s Famine Graveyard in Cashel.
The museum holds a large collection of original memorabilia relating to many periods of Irish history. Among the sections shown on its website are a Garden of Remembrance for the 1916 Rising, a nineteenth-century Gypsy caravan and an Irish Famine museum. The current curator is Bernard Minogue, the founder’s son-in-law, whose family were the last sole caretakers of the Rock of Cashel and who lives in the caretakers’ cottage below the Rock.
The museum is open every day except selected Fridays from mid-March to late October and by appointment in the off-season.
