About the museum
The Computer and Communications Museum of Ireland was founded in 2010 and is housed at the University of Galway, on the first floor of the Insight Centre for Data Analytics in the IDA Business Park at Dangan. It collects and shows historical computing machines and communication devices, and it presents itself as a place for technology heritage and education.
The displays follow how technology changed over the decades. Visitors can see early radios, rotary dial telephones, typewriters and well-known computers such as the DEC PDP-11 and the Apple II, as well as a hands-on area with classic video games like Space Invaders and Pac-Man.
The museum also works with schools and businesses and aims to encourage young people to consider careers in science and engineering. It regularly asks the public for stories and objects from Galway's computing industry in the 1970s and 1980s, and it has received donations such as a piece of an early transatlantic cable.
