About the museum
Athenry Castle is a three-storey hall-keep from the middle of the 13th century, built to guard a strategic ford on the Clareen River. It stands at the centre of Athenry, one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Ireland.
Inside, visitors see the basement, the Great Hall and the attic. A 20-minute audio-visual film about the history of the castle is shown on the third floor. The doorway and two windows carry floral carvings in the style of the School of the West, which Heritage Ireland describes as unique among Irish castles, and the battlements are original 13th-century work.
The castle is looked after by the Office of Public Works and can be visited on a guided or self-guided tour.
