About the museum
Millmount is a high mound beside the River Boyne in the centre of Drogheda. After the Anglo-Norman conquest Hugh de Lacy built a motte and bailey here in the twelfth century, and a stone fort later replaced it. During Cromwell's attack on the town in 1649 much of the fighting and slaughter took place at Millmount. The fort later became an army barracks, and in 1808 a Martello tower was built on the mound as a precaution against a French invasion. The fort was badly damaged in the Irish Civil War in 1922 and was restored and opened to the public in 2000.
Drogheda Museum is run by the Old Drogheda Society and is a good example of a community-run museum. Its rooms show the town's trades, industry and daily life, and cover archaeology, folk life, geology and military history.
The whole fort is now the Millmount Cultural Quarter, which also has craft studios, galleries and a café. The Martello tower can be climbed on a guided visit for views over the town and the river.
