About the museum
Highlanes Gallery is the municipal art gallery of Drogheda. It opened on 4 October 2006 in the former Franciscan church and friary, which local people called the High Lane Church. The Franciscans gave the property to the people of Drogheda in 2000, when their long presence in the town ended, and the conversion kept much of the character of the old church.
The gallery looks after the Drogheda Municipal Art Collection, which reaches back to the eighteenth century. It includes views of Drogheda and the Boyne by artists such as Gabriele Ricciardelli and Anderson Paisley, as well as paintings and drawings by Irish artists of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, among them Nano Reid, George Russell and Michael Healy. The gallery also holds the ceremonial sword and silver mace that King William III presented to Drogheda after the Battle of the Boyne.
Besides showing works from the collection, the gallery runs a programme of changing exhibitions, talks, workshops and family events. A café, Five Good Things, is next door.
