About the museum
Freemasons’ Hall on Molesworth Street is the headquarters of the Grand Lodge of Ireland, which dates its beginnings to 1725 and is the second most senior Grand Lodge in the world. The purpose-built hall opened in 1869 and contains lodge rooms, offices, a library and archive, and a museum.
The museum outlines the history of the Masonic fraternity in Ireland and introduces some of the well-known people in that history. Its display cases hold a wide range of objects, including items of ceremonial regalia, jewellery, tools and historic documents. Admission to the museum is free, and it is open to the public on weekdays throughout the year.
Visitors can also join a tour of Freemasons’ Hall itself. Tours are held on weekday afternoons, and groups of twelve or more can arrange a private visit. The Grand Lodge library and archive are used by researchers, including people looking up ancestors who were Freemasons.
