About the museum
Gallarus Oratory is one of Ireland’s best preserved early Christian churches. It was built between the seventh and ninth centuries entirely of dry stone, without mortar, in the shape of an upturned boat, and it remains watertight after more than a thousand years. It was probably used for private worship or as a pilgrim shelter by monks seeking solitude.
The oratory stands near Ballydavid on the Dingle Peninsula, with Mount Brandon behind it and Smerwick Harbour in front. Nearby are the well-preserved fifteenth-century Gallarus Castle and a pilgrim path.
The visitor centre, a short distance from the oratory, introduces the site with a short audiovisual presentation on its origins and construction, followed by a self-guided walk along a gravel path to the oratory. It also has a café with sandwiches, cakes and hot drinks, and a gift shop with locally made crafts, books and jewellery. The centre welcomes groups and schools and occasionally hosts events and exhibitions.
