About the museum
Kildare Town Heritage Centre is housed in a restored eighteenth-century market house on Market Square and presents the history of one of the oldest towns in Ireland. It also serves as a tourist office with information on the whole county and has a souvenir shop.
Its main attraction is the Legends of Kildare experience, a guided virtual reality journey with a guide in medieval costume. Visitors are welcomed in the style of the Middle Ages, meet figures from Irish myth and history, watch the Fianna train and fly with a peregrine falcon. The experience is offered in English, Irish, French, German and Chinese and lasts about half an hour.
The centre also offers guided tours and storytelling, audio guides, and an online story map of the medieval history of Kildare town.
