About the museum
The Kiltartan Gregory Museum is housed in a red-brick schoolhouse built in 1892 at Kiltartan Cross, near Gort. It was built at the wish of Sir William Gregory, husband of Lady Augusta Gregory and a former Governor of Ceylon, and the building has ornamental details inspired by Ceylon. It stands in the landscape that inspired the Irish Literary Revival.
After Coole House was demolished in 1941, many of its contents were preserved here. The museum shows rare manuscripts, memorabilia and original furniture belonging to the Gregory family, and items relating to Lady Gregory’s son Robert, the Irish airman who inspired a poem by W. B. Yeats. A preserved classroom of the early 20th century shows what rural education was like.
The museum is run by local volunteers, who lead guided tours on the Yeats and Gregory connections. It also keeps genealogical and local-history records for the Kiltartan and Gort area, and it is one of the stops on the Lady Gregory and Yeats Heritage Trail. The adjoining Millennium Park offers a quiet place to rest.
