About the museum
The Market House stands in Market Square in the centre of Monaghan. It was completed in 1792 and is built of local grey limestone, with a five-bay front and a pediment carrying the arms of the Conyngham family, later Lords Rossmore. It is regarded as one of the most elegant eighteenth-century buildings in the north of Ireland.
After standing empty for many years, the building was refurbished by Monaghan County Council with state funding in 2002 and 2003 and opened as an arts venue on 28 November 2003.
Today it houses the council’s Arts Office and a gallery and event space. Exhibitions are usually booked a year ahead and change regularly, and the building is also used for concerts, readings, workshops and rehearsals.
