About the museum
The Royal Irish Fusiliers Museum tells the story of the Royal Irish Fusiliers and the regiments that came together in it, whose origins go back to regiments raised in Dublin in 1793 by Sir John Doyle. The museum opened in 1997 and is run as a charity.
It stands in Sovereign’s House (also described as the Servants’ House) on The Mall, close to Armagh Courthouse. The Grade B+ listed building dates from around 1810 and was built using local Armagh stone left over from the completion of the nearby courthouse.
The collection includes uniforms, medals, regalia and the regiment’s two Victoria Crosses, set out in curated displays that also use personal stories and archive material about the men who served. The Eagle Takers Gallery won an award as the best exhibition in Ireland in 2003. The regimental archive and library can be consulted by appointment, and the museum has a small shop.
