About the museum
Sligo County Museum opened in 1955 in a former manse on Stephen Street, built around 1867 and linked to the town's Congregational church. The adjoining Gothic church has served as Sligo Library since 1954, and the museum is run by Sligo County Council.
The collections cover the history of County Sligo from the Stone Age to the present, with local artefacts, geological samples and a firkin of bog butter more than a century old. A Yeats Room holds manuscripts, photographs, letters and newspaper cuttings connected with the poet W. B. Yeats, together with a copy of his 1923 Nobel Prize medal. Paintings by Jack B. Yeats, George William Russell and Seán Keating hang beside material linked to Countess Markievicz and her sister Eva Gore-Booth, and the News from the Past display recalls Sligo in the First World War. Nora Niland, after whom the Niland Collection is named, helped to build up the Yeats collection.
The museum closed on 6 September 2025 for urgent repairs to its façade and is to be restocked after the building work.
