About the museum

The centre occupies the Old Courthouse in the village of Grange in north County Sligo. It is run by the Grange and Armada Development Association, a local group that grew out of the events marking the 400th anniversary of the Spanish Armada in 1988. That year volunteers staged a pop-up museum, a symposium, walks and visits by Spanish guests, and produced a booklet on the journey of the Armada survivor Francisco de Cuéllar from Sligo to the Causeway Coast, which led to the creation of the De Cuéllar Trail.

On 21 September 1588 three great ships of the Spanish Armada were driven ashore on the strand at Streedagh, a few kilometres from Grange, and more than a thousand soldiers, sailors and noblemen are said to have died. A small number of survivors reached the shore and were sheltered by local people and by Irish chieftains such as O'Rourke of Breifne and MacClancy of Dartry, despite the risk of reprisals from the English authorities. The disaster has been remembered in the local community ever since.

The visitor centre opened in 2018 and presents this history through artefacts and replicas connected with the three wrecks, together with a documentary of about half an hour on the life of Captain Francisco de Cuéllar, whose written account is one of the best-known eyewitness records of the Armada in Ireland. The association also organises guided visits, events and the Spanish Armada Festival each September.
