About the museum
St Connell's Museum in Glenties is named after St Connell Caol, who founded a monastic settlement on Inishkeel Island, near Portnoo, in the sixth century. The museum is housed in the late nineteenth-century courthouse of the town, and its displays include the original prison cells of that building.
The collection brings together local history objects from the Glenties area. It has many artefacts connected with the Great Famine in south-west Donegal, an extensive display on the County Donegal Railways Joint Committee and mementos from the filming of the film Dancing at Lughnasa, which was shot in the area. A reading room holds local history records for visitors who want to research the area.
The local community website describes the museum as open throughout the year, with guides available to show visitors around.
