About the museum
Glencolmcille Folk Village was the idea of Father James McDyer, a priest who arrived in the parish in 1951 when unemployment and emigration were draining the population. Over three decades he organised community projects and supported local industries, and the folk village museum was one of them. It was built within three months in 1967 as a clachan of three cottages and was opened by the Minister for Transport and Tourism.
New cottages and exhibits have been added over the years and the museum is still a community project, with local people donating time, objects, stories and photographs. The thatched cottages are exact replicas of homes from three periods, the 1700s, 1800s and 1900s, and they are furnished accordingly with beds, cooking equipment, tools and lighting of each era.
Visitors can wander through the village or join a guided tour that explains how earlier generations lived and how music, dance and crafts survived despite hardship. The site also has a craft shop and tea rooms, and an education programme lets school pupils try activities such as churning butter and writing with slate and chalk.
