About the museum

Tides of Time occupies the restored former St Nicholas’ Church of Ireland in the centre of Carrick-on-Suir. The building was the town’s heritage centre before it was redeveloped as a visitor experience. The project cost about €440,000, supported by Fáilte Ireland through the EU Just Transition Fund and by the Carrick-on-Suir Development Association, and the centre was officially opened on 23 July 2026.

The exhibition follows the River Suir through the history of the town, showing how the river shaped trade, industry, migration and everyday life. It combines artefacts, photographs, sound and interactive displays. Visitors can meet Dorothea Herbert, the rector’s daughter and diarist who lived in Carrick-on-Suir in the late eighteenth century, through an interactive AI experience that answers questions in her voice.

A further section is the Michael Coady Study, a careful reconstruction of the working room of the Carrick-on-Suir poet and writer, relocated to the centre with its books, photographs and personal objects. The centre also celebrates the cyclist Seán Kelly, who was born near the town. A café, a bookshop and a venue for events are part of the building, and the churchyard and grounds can be visited separately from the exhibition.
