About the museum
The Tipperary Museum of Hidden History is the county museum of Tipperary and stands in the civic centre of Clonmel. The county collection dates back to the 1940s, and the museum building is described as the first purpose-built local authority county museum in Ireland. It is run by Tipperary County Council.
The permanent displays set out the story of the county through objects and multi-sensory presentations. Themes include castles and conquest, courage and superstition, violent death, rural life in nineteenth-century Tipperary and the big houses of the Suir valley. Visitors meet a life-size figure of Oliver Cromwell, learn about a local man and his boat, and see heroes from sport and entertainment.
Besides the permanent galleries, the museum offers a changing programme of temporary exhibitions, workshops, lectures and school activities. Audio guides are available in five languages.
